ZTechnik is expanding its line of accessories for BMW R1200 motorcycles with the addition of a new line of hard anodized aluminum frame plugs. ZPlugs™ add a finished look to the open frame points on the R1200GS, GS Adventure, R1200R, R1200ST and R1200S while protecting the frame and sensitive components from environmental damage.
ZPlugs™ are forged from bars of solid aluminum then media blasted to produce a rough surface texture. Finally, they are hard anodized. Anodizing is the process of immersing aluminum in a bath of sulfuric acid, called an electrolyte, and running a low-voltage electric current through the acid solution. The result of normal anodizing is a thin coating of aluminum oxide on the surface of the original aluminum. If the acid solution is cooled to the freezing point of water and the amount of electric current is increased substantially the process is called hard anodizing.
Hard anodizing is more commonly found in industrial or commercial applications than in consumer products. Hard anodizing produces a much thicker coating of aluminum oxide, penetrating holes and fissures in the surface to create a more uniform appearance than regular anodized aluminum. Hard anodizing also yields a product resistant to harsh weather and salt sprays. The surface of ZTechnik ZPlugs™ is only a few points away from the hardness of diamonds. The natural hard-anodized color is a close match for the 2009 and 2010 R1200GS and GS Adventure Titanium Cylinder Head Covers.
